The truth about the power off problem with new NDSLs

I flashed over a dozen DS Lite units, and the first thread is filled with a load of crap (no offense). I flashed without power, AND I lost contact with SL1 MANY times. It reacted *just like* the old phat DS. Re-establish connection and the progress indicator continues. I have never had the unit power off on me. And I really do not see how anybody can hit the second screw that is supposed to fry the unit, unless you are completely drunk or something!

i flashed a replacement unit today without problems. it did not turn off either when the sl1 was shorted, whilst unplugged.

it's a european ds lite, the packaging batch number was dated 26/10/06.

I didn't have time to read the entire thread, but I thought it was worth mentioning that I have flashed about 30+ DS Lites since UK launch day (the most recent was 2 days ago) and not one of them has turned off without the screw being shorted. I always flash with the power plugged in.

However I have noticed that the screw is somehow easier to short on some units...

I've flashed 3 consecutive, brand new fresh DS Lites successfully. I even forgot to plug the power in. Maybe its with the region?

I was flashing a DS Lite for my friend, it was a brand new one from Best Buy that should have arrived like the end of September.  I remember that I didn't keep it shorted the whole time, it seems that these DS Lites may never see Canada.

Hey.. not to beat a dead horse here, but last night i flashed another black lite (J version) using the toothpick with foil, etc, etc, and got powered off and black screens 3 times before getting to 5% flashed... yikes!

The ABXY recovery worked easily, so no worries, but this was a brand new unit with the latest Nintendo firmware (v5 i think).  Anyways, what i said in my original post, still seems to hold true for JAPANESE units.  You folks in North America and UK seem to be without this concern apparently.

Just thought i'd share.

AWWWW SHIT GUYS....  I got a new DSL (cuz my old one had a crack and a dead pixel), and it is in CANADA.  It is just like the ones Daveychan described.  It seems like they are reaching this part of the world now...

BEWARE!  I'm too scared to flash my DS Lite, maybe I'll do it later.  I'm scared...  :(

PharaohsVizier

Hey Daveychan, any tips on how to flash this DS Lite of mine?

PharaohsVizier

woot!  I got it done, I just stuck the thing in there and waited.  The fail safe feature is the best invention EVER.

Quote from: "bitblt"Apparently there is a solution for the shut off problem. Make a tool for shorting SL1 using a 1k Ohm resistor.

Damn I can't see pics, but w/ever, what's done is done.  I'm probably not going to flash any more of my friends' DS Lites anymore.

MagickCrafter

So this is why I bricked my DS Lite...  Good to know.  I did lose the connection between SL1 multiple times, but after like the 3rd or 4th time my black DS Lite shut off and I bricked it.  So, in fact, this isn't bull sh*t but it seems that it does not power off after the first reconnect but after multiple ones.

MagickCrafter, how much of the process got completed?  If it's over 5% or so, you should be able to use the Failsafe code to boot a slot-2 device (except MMD) in DS mode enough to reflash it.

Hold A+B+Select+Start upon bootup to try it.  I've heard you can't see the Supercard menu sometimes, so backup everything off your CF/SD card to your computer and delete it off the card, adding back only flashme.nds so that you can lauch it by just pressing A without having to see the menu.

MagickCrafter sent his DS Lite to me for service . . .

I was able to recover MagickCrafter's black DS Lite by performing the BIOS swap trick. I tried the A+B+Select+Start recovery procedure but it didn't work in this particular case. When I ran FlashMeLite it restarted from 1% progress. I tested the SL1 connection with my tinfoil tool and the DS Lite did not shut off for me.
