The truth about the power off problem with new NDSLs

I own a European DSL and it powered off when I bridged SL1, it was at 1% when it happened. I turned the ds back on, and started flashme again. I did lose the connection 2 or three times but it didn't power down when i reconnected. I guess it's more of a random thing.

2)  If you bridge the SL1 and then remove it, the next time you bridge, you will power off.  Basically, this means you've got one try to get this right!  (If you have begun a flash and didn't complete it, there are recovery methods, and results vary.  Check this forum for information about this before you cry.)  If you twist, fidget, sneeze, or had too many burritos and salsa for lunch... be warned!  When flashing, I recommend holding the NDSL vertically in one solid grip, and use your other steady hand to control your bridging tool.  Some like using a mirror to see the screen. Do whatever is most comfortable for you!  Next, put your bridging tool in the hole in one smooth motion and then FREEZE!, and hold it there.  If the percentage counter starts increasing, just keep waiting.  If it doesn't, I strongly recommend you remove your tool, power off, and START OVER.  The reason for this is that if you managed to bridge the gap, but didn't hold it long enough to kick start the flash, you'll lose power the second time you touch that SL1.[/quote]

That is oddly specific to my situation. I have already cried... can someone please help me with this? I keep turning it back on and shorting it but it keeps dying. How can I fix this? Any information will be appreciated.

Don't worry about that.
It's not true that you have to do it in one instance and the whole thing that you only have one chance.
I flashed 3 DSL and I stopped several times during the process to teach my brother how to do it.
Just take your time and try as many times as you want, as long as your DS is plugged with the adaptor.

The "shut off" problem described in this thread seems to be isolated to some Japan models. Since this thread was first posted I've flashes about a dozen more DS Lites, both US and Euro, and I have yet to come across the problem.  So far US and Euro versions seem to be safe. People should not be afraid to flash DS Lites. If anyone is concerned then they need to understand it's safe to test SL1 before running flashme.  If your DS Lite shuts off during the test, no problem, simply turn it back on again.  The only danger of shut off is during the first 5% of the flashme process.

Well... I stopped in the middle, touched it again, and it shut off. And now when I short it it just shuts off. I'm getting some help in this thread:

Hey Gleasonator,

So glad to see you finally got it working!  The toothpick dealy-o with the electric tape insulation is quite the nice tool eh?  Also, a bit secretly pleased to see that my SL1 information on J NDSLs is also starting to be true for other units from other areas of the world.  NOT happy that this happened to you of course, just glad to know that you could recover and all is well!

Just to give you some insight... I was flashing my brand new DS lite (reflashing, actually, since I original put the wrong version on...) and accidentally powered off at 28%. However, I just turned it right back on, went to flashme, and it actually had saved my progress. Quite nice.

Apparently there is a solution for the shut off problem. Make a tool for shorting SL1 using a 1k Ohm resistor.

Well, I finally found one of these elusive DS Lites that loves to shut off the second you bridge it.

First, my apologies for those I might have thought (and even said) were looney tunes about this.  Considering how many I've flashed and never come across one, I was DEFINITELY ready to write this off.

I can't tell you WHY it happens.  I stuck my trusty toothpick tool in (flashed TONS with this) and BAM - lights out.  Repeated this a couple of times to verify ...

My solution was to take a very small jeweler's screwdriver and METHODICALLY bridge the SL1 in the very center of the pads.  Doing this enabled me to get the unit flashed successfully.

I have no idea why the toothpick failed, and the screwdrive worked unless the foil conducted TOO WELL between the two and the screwdriver didn't.

Suffice to say, TEST with the toothpick BEFORE actually trying to flash.  If it craps out, try something smaller, different material.

This resister tool looks interesting ...

so has anyone tried the resistor? would the resistor damage the ndsl in anyway?

bitblt

I haven't tried using a resistor yet.  The resistor will not damage your NDSL.  It's just as safe as using a tinfoil tool.

lengz

i guess i'll try using the resistor. i'm going to be flashing 2 dslites and 1 later on. i've used the toothpick/foil with no problems. i'll update once it's done.

Ok so i got a DSL from bestbuy recently (gf's) brand new in box. I don't know which wave it was or etc. I took it out and tried both resistor and toothpick. It did not turn off using both. The tooth pick is definitely easier to use because of it's flat tip.. the resistor is kind of tricky beccause you need to get it in a position to get both tips touching. Both ways could flash. I'm getting another DSL from buy.com arriving on wednesday, so i'll see what's up with that one.

Ok so i just got a white dsl today in the mail. flashed it with no problems. i don't know why, but this one was a little tougher to get than the other one with the toothpick. maybe the foil wore off or something.
