DS-Link and unflashing a DS Lite...

I think this is possible. The DS-Link website offers a file that not only allows you to flash the unit, but to back up the current firmware. I think that if you use a MK4-Mini (or MK4-Key) to boot the DS-Link on an unflashed DS Lite, and then run this app to back up the unflashed DS Lite's firmware, you would then have a backup of the original DS Lite firmware unaltered.

Once you have this firmware, you would be able to run the app once again on your DS-Link and restore the original DS Lite firmware to a flashed unit, hence unflashing it.

I have yet to test my theory (I will as soon as the MK4-Mini I ordered arrives), but I see no reason as to why this would not work. Not that I need a DS Lite unflashed, but I would just like to test the possibility of doing so. If anybody else has a DS-Link and a MK4-Mini or MK4-Key, would you venture to test this?

You didn't need to order a MK4 mini zektor. I have been able to use SCDS to boot DSLink on a non-flashed DS Lite. After booting to the SCDS menu I can start the MK4 dump program, then swap SCDS with DSLink and press the A button twice to boot DSLink.

I have talked about using the DSLink firmware backup tool before . . .

. . . I have been experimenting with a DSLink firmware dumper utility. I have successfully dumped a factory fresh DS Lite firmware. This utility should also allow me to restore DS Lite firmware back to original factory firmware. I'm still experimenting and will post results when I have an opportunity.
It works perfectly. I have successfully restored a flashed DS Lite back to original factory fresh firmware. Unlike using noflashme this tool will properly restore DS Lite firmware without glitches.

The DS backup/restore tool can only be used with a DSLink. Let me know if anyone needs me to properly restore their DS Lite firmware. PM me.

If someone needs help in Europe (especially in Germany), i can restore it too.

I restored the Firmware of 2 DS Lite successfully last month.

Wow, how'd I miss that :) Well, either way, that is great news for the folks who want to unflash their Lite units. As for the MK4...oh well. Another gadget to add to my "grey market" collection I suppose :)

but this is only possible using the ds-link rire?

Correct. Only DSLink can be used with the DS firmware backup/restore tool.

Yes.

This makes the DS-Link somewhat special. Now, with this tool that the team so kindly supplied, we can successfully dump any firmware out there....and possibly new and upcoming firmware. And if so, we can always go from flashed to non-flashed any time we wish...providing we have a DS-Link :) Really glad I have this card :)

bitblt,

Explain exactly how you would unflash a flashed DS to get it back to it's factory fresh settings.

Well, you can do this on a DS Phat with the "noflashme" that comes with the flashme package. BUT, if you try this on a DS Lite, it will screw up the machine.

Now, if you are asking how to unflash a DS Lite, we were just talking about it. DS-Link team supplies a tool for firmware flashing that ALSO can back up current firmware. It only works on a DS-Link tho. So, If you can get the DS-Link to boot on an UNFLASHED DS-Lite, you can then BACK UP that firmware...hence giving you a copy of the ORIGINAL firmware. Then, you can boot the DS-Link and this application again on a flashed unit, and restore using the firmware dump you created from the unflashed unit. Bingo, a DS Lite unflashed and factory new!

This is good news, as previously there was NO WAY to unflash a flashed DS Lite.

Do you guys have an unflashed firmware?  Or an unflashed DS Lite to test this with?  I already flashed mine, so it would be useless if we don't have a non-flashed DS.

I tested this today at work. A co-worker had an unflashed DS Lite and I was able to grab his firmware using a Supercard DS/Mk4 dump/DS-Link & DS-Link firmware dumper. I then used it in conjunction with the DS-Link and software on my flashed DS Lite, and it indeed unflashed the DS Lite perfectly. I of course re-flashed afterward :) So, yes, it works just fine. If you are asking for the firmware, no can do. I don't want to break forum rules. If you have a DS-Link, a way to run it on an unflashed DS Lite (Mk4 key, Mk4 Mini, or SCDS with Mk4 dump) and a friend with an unflashed DS Lite...you can get one yourself.
