Wow, now THAT is a ninja little cable. Looks like that auction isn't actually for the cable, though.

Hi, your link to the drive you bought doesn't work anymore, but if you bought a SCSI hard drive you're going to need something to put it in. This cable alone won't do it.

Devil_Spawn

why could he not just use a cable? aslong as you are careful you should be fine.

A SCSI cable is wider than an ide cable you would need an SCSI PCI card to connect it to the computer  :)

@HI a dvd burner is easy to fit trust us  :)

just make sure everything is powered off and that you just look at how the cables are connected to other drives in your machine and connect them the same way round :D

If you have a dvd rom drive installed you can remove that and replace it with a dvd burner it will also function as a dvd rom drive  :)

You'd have to be REAL careful to use a naked hard drive and not do bad things to it. Besides, some drives rely on the case it is in to help disperse heat, though I doubt a 20GB SCSI hard drive will be one of those.

Hi

So, cables won't work. What I need is a new hard drive alltogether. Is that what you are all saying?

By the way, I don't think you get it. My dvd drive is behind my cd-r drive, which is behind my floppy drive, which is behind something else I don't even know the name of, which is behind... you get the idea.

I'd have to take a big part of my computer apart. That's the way it was built unfortunately.

Anyway, If I have to buy a new hard drive I will. I think I'll get one from bestbuy.com I know bestbuy is overpriced but as I said I have a $25 dollor gift card and if I order for in-store pick up, I can use the $50 I cannot spend online.

Is that what you'd suggest. Sorry, but with my lack of knowlege and what happend with my "last" hard drie, I don't want to do anything unless you guys reccomend it.

p.s. sneef, if your not too busy with your work and you see this thread I'd like to know what you think.

basically its be real careful with the drive and buy that cable, or buy an enclosure to make it a external hard drive which would be safest or spend the money on a new external hard drive.
And how the heck can your cd drive be behind another one and how cna the floppy be behind that.  They are stacked and do not affect the way you put a hard drive in, I'm confused  :?

This reminds me of when I built my first pc :)

I would spend hours researching components and stuff on my overpriced Dell, then I hoped it would all be correct and that it'll all work. The scary thing is, I've been out of the pc building game for so long I'll have to go through all that again one day :(

But don't get discouraged, the end will justify the means!

Never get discouraged, I always thought computer parts as more expensive legos.  If the right amount of pins match with the other one it goes there.  I figured it out by myself thinking I would blow up something, the only thing that got messed up was the Windows Xp upgrade which you should never do, when you install new components clean install!

Okay, now I really feel like an idiot. (No offense to any of you, your not the ones making me feel like an idiot. It's my lack of knowlege...) Anyway, so, a new option comes into the picture, an enclosure? Am I missing something yet again.

And, when you say "Be careful" what do you mean? Do you mean, don't drop the hard drive, or do you mean "Make one wrong move and..." Okay, it's probably something inbetween the two, but what?

no NEVER AN IDIOT ... just inexperience makes you kinda unsure/nervous that you may do something wrong but thats quite normal for someone who is just starting out remember WE ALL have to learn somewhere and sometime  :)

just ask us as many questions as you need and we will answer  :)

and only proceed when fully confident  :)

Hi

Okay, well, I've worked out the problems with my bank account. (Well, does closing an old account and opening a new one count as fixing a problem?) Plus, I sold my bestbuy giftcard to a friend. So, I now have $90 to spend online- though, I really don't want to spend all of it on a new hard drive. I haven't checked E-bay yet, but atleast things are working out, and I see know reason why I won't be able to get an external hard drive that's atleast 18gb in size for the amount of $$ I have now.

I'm still going to check with all of you before I buy anything, but atleast I'm in good shape now.

You'd have to "be careful" if you plan to plug in the drive naked with no enclosure. I wouldn't recommend that. Doing so leaves the drive open to static, dust, cat sneezes and so on. Even with an enclosure you shouldn't knock it around too much but you wouldn't have to handle it like a newborn baby.

Don't feel like an idiot. You're not asking stupid questions. And I'd tell you if you were, trust me. :)

EDIT: Keep in mind that I don't know exactly what you ended up buying, but does this look like what you need? http://www.copystars.com/generic_scsi_external_5_25_6412_prd1.htm Not exactly descriptive about their product are they?

sonicwind

I didn't find any external scsi enclosures on newegg but I found this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822101028
300GB for 90$ shipped, its in your budget and you get way more storage.
actually bad reviews so
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136077
is a better choice for the price.

Hi

sort of unimportant post, but if anyone is wondering why I have dissapeered from my own thread, it's because I'm actually still having trouble with my bank account. I need to link up paypal to the account, paypal says it needs to varify my account, I put in the amount of $$ it wants, it tells me I'm wrong for some odd reason, and my bank's site keeps crashing for some reason.

I'll get it worked out eventually... and THEN I'll be able to actually get a hard drive, finally.

Also, as I said, I'm going to try not to spend all the $90 I have. And I only need 20gb. Maybe 40gb would be good, just so there's a very small chance I'll run into this problem again, but not much more. My origanal hard drive, the one that came with my computer, is only 40gb, and I've had my computer for five years now.
