Supercard lite and Micro-SD card experiences

Hi, please post if you've got a supercard micro.  Say what type of micro-sd flash memory you've got (ATP?  Sandisk?  Kingston?  What size?  Ordered from where?), what patcher you're using (does the old SD one cut it?  Do you need the new one?  How much difference is there?)  and what kind of performance you get in troublesome stuff, such as:

Castlevania DoS (intro)
Animal Crossing (going indoors/outdoors, menu)
Moonshell (playing video, listening to music, etc)
Tony Hawk (general gameplay)
DSOrganize (writing to the SD card)
Other homebrew (DS2Win, Beup, Picodrive, etc)
GBA roms known for slowdown

Hopefully this'll help prospective buyers decide what memory would be best for them.  Is Ultra-II really necessary when it allegedly only has a tiny increase in performance?  Or does standard MicroSD work fine?  Is it better to go with a card that's from a well-known and reliable company but with a smaller capacity?  Should we wait a while to see how things work out or is everything fine already?  And so on.

sneef

i posted this in the mini-review thread, but i'll just quote myself here to answer part of your question:

I can't get DSOrganize or REIN to work (boots but won't write to microSD).  animal crossing trainer seems ok (i didnt actually write to my save.  I will after backing it up with REIN on m3mini).

I hope someone can come up with a standard fix for homebrew... or we'll have to wait for individual pre-patched versions like the moonshell on supercard.cn

KINGOFNOOBS

Did you try the new patcher? What bout the older patcher? you tried both? Whats REIN?

sneef

patching is not for homebrew, only for commercial roms.

REIN is sata's DS save tool (with other tools and its own FAT driver too i think)

Lets you backup your original DS cart's eeprom to your SD/CF card, among other things.

I hope a patcher comes from SaTa for most homebrew.

Yeah I saw you said that in your mini-review, but then another guy called you crazy and said you had no idea what you're talking about.  Not to say that you are either of those things, but it's possible you just have an exceptional "stantard" micro-SD card.  Sort of like the way that sometimes you get a CPU that can be overclocked by 10% while another of the same make and model can be overclocked 20%.  Or maybe he's just got a really crappy one.  Just random inefficiencies and stuff like that might be what's causing the difference of opinion.

By seeing a broader range of responses, it might be possible to tell what average performance is with various types of micro-SD... whether there is in fact variation, or what's going on.  Is it better to go with a 512 mb ATP over a 1024 mb sandisk because ATP are faster?  Or does the speed really even matter that much this time around?

sneef

well i'm not crazy, and i know what i'm talking about. LOL...

and I've tested 2 standard sansisk microSD cards and one kingston.  So it's not a freak occurrance.  man.. i'm just trying to help out by answering your question.. i guess you don't want my input.  so be it.

ImmortalNinja

heh,
Sneef guess you're not having a good week with people calling you crazy and saying that you didnt have the SCL.

Well I dont think this guy doesnt want your input. I think the aim of this thread is to try and compile a list of performances and compatability with different types of hardware so we know if there is anything to avoid or not.

I for one was very happy with your input in this forum and for your Lite review thread.

Sneef, nothing at all against you.  I'm a game developer, it's hard-wired into me not to believe just one guy reporting "great performance", especially when another says "horrible performance", regardless of who either party is.

It's not unheard of for one supercard to perform differently from another - maybe this other guy got stuck with a bad SC.  Or maybe you've got a really good one.  So it seems logical to me that in order to be sure that slow microSD performs well, I'll need to gather responses from a broader range of people.

Really, I do value your input and appreciate the review you wrote very much, but it wouldn't matter even if you were the forum admin telling me it works great, I'd still ask for a second opinion.

Sneef is a good guy. His opinion is valued. All opinions are valued if they are constructive.

I for one get as many opinions as I can and then make my own decision from the information I gave gathered.

I do also agree that some people have problems with their Supercards/Patching software that I do not seem to have. People's set ups are different from one another and their lies some differentiating stories of what works and what doesn't.

I don't have nearly as many problems with GBA slowdown that I see other people have. Maybe I just try and find solutions to problems, maybe I am just lucky... who knows.

njchris

Which GBA roms have slowdown? I just got my sc lite and want to test different things.

Thanks

Yoshi's Island is the benchmark for slowdown for GBA... more so when there are a lot of characters on the screen at once.

Altor

Metroid Fusion.  If you can beat the first boss without slowdown, there won't be any slowdown at any time in the game.. eh.. most likely.  The "Nightmare" boss is the one that has ReAaaAAALLLLYYY bad problems, but I don't think you really want to play for several hours just to make sure there's no problems :)

If, indeed, you have no slowdown at that first boss, you must tell me how exactly you managed this!

njchris

From some brief testing for GBA:

Mario Kart had bad slowdown when a few other cars were on screen.

Metroid Fusion, I played to the first boss and didn't notice any slowdown. Beat the boss and I did not notice any probs.

Yoshi, I just played through the 1st lvl and didnt notice any slowdown.

Metroid Zero Mission had slowdown in the first level.. jumping around it slowed down signifigantly.

For GBA, I dont think the memory card matters but I have a sandisk Ultra II 1gig microsd.

NDS: Animal Crossing, worked fine. :)
