Forget the 10 crappy PSOne games that can only be bought if you have a PS3.  Now, rip your own games to your memstick and play them with the official PSOne PSP emulator using Dark Alex's custom 3.02 firmware:

I've been playing with this and it is very nifty. If I ever had any regrets about getting a PSP those regrets are gone now...

The emulator is actually amazing. FLAWLESS psx emu on my psp.... I spent half of last night playing tony hawks 2, casper, hercules, crash 2, final fantasy 9... and I'm testing out ALOT more tonight. Sony really went for the whole shebang when they developed that emu... practically perfect compatability with fullspeed emu and sound all the way! not that half-arsed n64 effort nintendo devved for the gamecube which worked with about 12 games.

I will point this out... My ds is without a doubt going to gather dust for a while. There is no chance of it comparing to my psp until something worth playing pops up.

Half-assed N64 emulator by Nintendo?  Are you referring to the one on the Zelda bonus discs?

kyus

Yeah... Nintendo were planning on releasing more than just zelda games to the gamecube...

Err... not really. The emulator was designed only with Zelda OoT, Ura OoT, and MM in mind. That's exactly why it's compatibility was so low. Sony plans on releasing more PS1 games for PSP so they of course want to make sure their emulator is as compatible as possible, otherwise they have to put a lot more work into altering the emulator with each batch they release.

kyus

Around the time wind waker was released with the ocarina master quest disc, Nintendo placed shots of Super mario 64 inside the usage manual of new gamecube consoles. They were intent on releasing a good few other games, and discussions I've been part of throughout tehskeen and johs gc tracker in the past have shown some interesting things that they had planned to do with the gamecube, and emulation. No company makes an emulator for two or three games. Do you think they'd put so much effort into developing something like that to give away???

Anyways... sorry for creating any annoyance. I have a feeling I hit a nerve with some of the zealots of the forum. To put my argument into a more fanboy-friendly form, here...

The psp in its intended form is quite possibly the most pointless handheld in existence. The ds floors it in terms of quality titles and innovation.

The psp with the latest custom firmware is without argument the best handheld ever.

I admit the emulator is awesome.  I have been playing FF7 all night and I have to say its flawless.  But, this still doesnt make it the best handheld ever.  Not to flame but, when this thing can emulate every retro console out there 100%, then, and only then will I will then give it such a deserving title.  Until then it is almost the best handheld.

:-)

Castlevania SotN works perfectly. If only there were L2 and R2 buttons...

Another point for the PSP emulation scene.

Ehhhh... quit the fanboyism, both from NDS and PSP. I think this forum is as good as it is because it's not opinion-based, but rather fact-based.
This is quite an achievement, homebrew-wise. On the other hand... this could severely harm the PSP's game market. I mean, why would you buy "PSX emulated by Sony" originals when you have almost the full PSX gamelist available for free? But, indeed, it's quite an achievement for the scene in general.

For a more biased opinion, this kind of things are possible in the PSP because it's far, FAR more capable than the DS in terms of graphic processing and all that stuff. But, then again, as most people would agree, emulating old consoles is not what makes a new console good. Let's see what "PSP" stands for: PlayStation PORTABLE. It's like a PS2, but tiny. It wants to serve as the same thing as a PS2 but... in a tiny format. PS2 can play PSX games, and that doesn't make it history's best console.

Is this cracked emu great stuff? Yes. Is it ground-breaking? Maybe. In both senses (scene and marketing). Is this cool to know? Yes, indeed. Does this make the DS obsolete or a bad system? Not at all.

PS: PHERK... why am I in the mood for a burguer now? :S

Yeah PHERK, every time I see a post by you, I want mcdonalds... and I hate mcdonalds :S It's weird.

I dont think the emulator will hurt sales for Sony.  Who the hell wants ports of their old PSX games?  They want to buy new games and the ability to emulate older games.  I forget who said "Backwards compatibility is something that everybody wants but nobody uses".

The problem with the old games I want to play again is the fact that I've played them already.
